Teesside University

I participated in several extra curricular projects while studying at Teesside University.  The above image shows an area in The Stephenson Building on campus.   This was originally a room with painted grey walls and vinyl tiled floors. It is to be used as a waiting and meeting area for an adjacent Boardroom.  We created a design based on a traditional study, with a contemporary feel.  We used Chesterfield style chairs and a button backed sofa in colourful patchwork fabrics, and used wallpapers to create the effect of wood panelling with bookshelves above.  A mixture of wood flooring and carpet adds to the cosy feel of the room, and a bright pink mounted stag's head gives a quirky feel.

We were asked by the University to create some spaces for students to study and socialise, again in the Stephenson Building.  This is the main building on campus for Science and Engineering subjects, and it was felt that students were simply using the building purely for the lectures, having nowhere to meet and chat or study afterwards.  We redesigned 3 areas within the building that were currently access areas for the lecture theatres.  We used bright colours, themed decals and patterned carpeting to bring the areas to life.  We added study pods, and comfortable seating within the areas to encourage students to feel comfortable to stay and work or chat.

We have been told that the areas are now widely used by the students, and are no longer 'dead' spaces within the building.  The areas are eye catching and welcoming and bring a fresh bright feel to the building.
